The last episode of Somebody Somewhere ends on a really high, and quite literally. While looking into the audience surrounded by most of the HBO comedy supporting cast (Jeff Hiller, Mary Catherine Garrison, Murray Hill, Tim Bagley), Bridget Everett ‘s Sam sings Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb,” providing a power ballad toasting the newlyweds.
While it is a great habit of the series at its best, the series’ regular grace at being most piteously sentimental and still not overly so makes the scene a resonate finale not only for the show but the stars.
Co-creator Hannah Bos explained that we know not that such was to be the final epilogue of the series and they’ve been writing as though any single moment could will prove to be the last of the show. “We also filmed that during the first week of shooting this season because of cast and schedule, so we were really just like ‘Okay, please let this work.’”
Bos and Thureen first presented the germ of what would become Somebody Somewhere in October 2018, and while Sunday’s episode will be the final installment of the series Bos, Thureen, and star Brad Everett insist that they will revisit these characters one day. Below, the creative trio sat down with THR to look back at the evolution of the show and ahead to the, well, still somewhat foggy path.
I guess the first thing we would want to discuss is ‘The Climb’ and where the notion of that song sprang from …
BRIDGET EVERETT That one I have been doing for a while now. I know it’s kinda cheesy, but it really is so positive and empowering to sing, and it just felt like the right song to sing in that moment. That’s a little bit of Bridget, yes, but more than anything I feel like there are Sams out there in every city singing daily through a screen in some dingy karaoke bar like that. Thus, I took a thread of those moments and incorporated a little of all the others.
When first developing the concept of this show back in 2018 did you already have an idea as to how you wanted the series to progress or did you have an ending envisioned? In what manner did this finale relate to those early thoughts that was proposed?
PAUL THUREEN One of the things that we cared about and talked about early on was the “Bridgetization” of Sam and how far that would be taken. You know there was originally a plan that at the end of season one Sam will be singing at a gala — so it’s lovely that at the end of the series she sings to her family and friends. You can have all these great plans when you start – when you’re prepping, when you’re script-writing – when you begin, when you don’t know what it is that you love about this world, all of that goes out the window.
