Simone Biles comes to husband Jonathan Owens’ defense after he claimed he was the ‘catch’ in the relationship.
In the second episode of Simone Biles: ‘Rising,’ aired on Friday, the gymnast confronted the criticism Owens received after his interview on ‘The Pivot’ last year, insisting that he was misunderstood.
Apparently, what social media provides its followers is this illusion that they actually know who you are and how you operate, Biles said.
“I hardly think they know the amount of stress it costs you, let alone when it’s an Olympic season.”
The 11 time Olympic medalist, 27, added, “I know we signed up to be judged in the gym but when you guys are going to talk about him or my family, yeah, I’m gonna come at you guys.”
She also criticised those that ‘compare our love to the no of trophies, medals, awards that I have’ she said this to mean that isn’t how love is calculated.
“More often than not, I stay quiet, but now, alright, I do have a voice, I’ve always had a voice,” Biles said.
“It has nothing to do with you not expecting me not to see it, it’s still crazy that I am obliged to reply.”
According to the Chicago bears safety in December 2023, Biles was his ‘catch’ and the most decorated Olympic gymnast ever.
He also initially said he didn’t know who she was when they connected through the dating app Raya in 2020, but he added that learning about her career “intrigued him.”
However, in another interview, which was aired live, Owens fought back all the criticism on social media, reiterating that there is no reason to shut the trolls down.
“I have all my social media notifications off, so I didn’t even know for a while,” Owens said to Us Weekly in an interview conducted on June 2024.
Whenever it came out I was actually with my mom and Simone so I was like, uh alright here are the comments and everything. For the most part, I attempt not to deal with it and as you know if you think that things are gradually escalating and becoming out of order that’s when you have to step in and say something.
“I don’t mean to, like, cuss, but like, you are damned, if you do, damned if you don’t,” he further said to the outlet. “And you know what they’ll do? If you say something, they’re going to say something; if you don’t say something, they’re going to say something.”
“So, just live your life. And as destiny has it, everybody will address you one way or the other, or they will speak about you, you might as well let them speak about you the way you want,” he further said.
And in one of the episodes of “Call Her Daddy” she narrated: “He said he was a catch.” “Because he is! Saying, “Oh I’ve never met a man like him.”
I am OK, I just sit and think something is fine and then I get on to Twitter and everyone is telling me to divorce this man. He’s mean!’” Biles recalled.
‘Pfft, he is so sweet.’ I mean he doesn’t sound like he wants a pb&j sandwich, but he’s really just a sweetheart.” He stands before me and says ‘proclaim the ground on which thou tread is holy’. Personally, I have never encountered a man like him … he intentionally tries to do anything for me.
