
Not surprisingly, the British tabloid report that a deal has been struck between the pga liv merger Tour and LIV Golf, may have been a little too hasty to be true.
Sun newspaper reported over the weekend as saying that the much anticipated combination between the competing golf circuits was done and according to theheadline the “Golf civil war is over”.
However, on Tuesday, the sports business news site, Front Office Sports, quoting insiders said that the tabloid had made the news before it happened.
There are still some conflicts left unresolved, the main amongst them being the problem of how to avoid violating antitrust legislation in the United States.
The timeline to have the merger completed has been since the end of this year, this being as a result of heavy internal pressure, Front Office Sports has provided.
While the PGA Tour has already come out with its 2025 schedule, LIV has announced four tournament dates for 2025 hence far.
The major surprise decision came on June 2, 2023, when PGA Tour and LIV Golf agreed to merge, and said the ‘framework agreement’ would be made by December 31, 2023.
That deadline passed, and PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan shakes hands and plays golf with Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan to this day as the decisive 18 months mark draws nearer.
The Sun’s rather seductive story stated that PIF would be granted 11% in the PGA Tour; that the 14 team competitions a year of LIV would have been affiliated with PGA; and that Woods and McIlroy “had secret negotiations to make the peace.”
